“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:22-23)

As we breathe in the freshness and energy ushered in by the dawn of the New Year, we also savour the renewed zeal for reaching newer heights in life. This is because we are called to go beyond ourselves; we are programmed for perfection. The Bible puts it as “… be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect”.

However, this perfection could be understood in different ways. It would be helpful and consoling to look at this ‘perfection’ as a means rather than an end in itself. Each attempt to better oneself; each rising after a fall; each learning from the failures of life…all this leads to our perfection or in other words, such experiences draw us closer to the ‘Perfect’ one.

While speaking to some students about their New Year Resolutions, it was evident that a majority of them have given up the habit of making resolutions for fear of breaking them. Who says resolutions are an end in themselves? No! Resolutions become a pathway to success and growth, if taken seriously and practised patiently.

So, let us face this year and all that it brings our way with grit and courage, knowing that we are not alone. Jesus, the Emmanuel (meaning “God with us”) is always with us. He who gives us life and who lay down His life for the sake of every human being (cf. John 3:16), knows the trials and struggles we go through. Let us also practice the virtues of patience and endurance coupled with joyful living, so that we can make the best of the year 2023.

Wishing you all a blessed and blissful New Year!

Jesus bless you!
